Ketel Thorstenson, LLP Certified Public Accountants, has been serving clients across Western South Dakota for over 75 years. With offices in Rapid City, Spearfish and Custer, the firm offers a wide array of services including tax, audit, bookkeeping, financial planning as well as valuation and estate planning services.
Company History
Ketel Thorstenson, LLP (KTLLP) has been operating as an accounting practice in Rapid City in one form or another since 1936, when Harold Heims first opened the practice and hired A.C. (Bud) Thorstenson shortly after. The building at the current 810 Quincy Street address was constructed in 1966; the same year that Roy Ketel and Rich Siekman worked together to form a new partnership. In 1967, the firm purchased its first computer, an IBM System 1130, and began its leadership in computer technology. Since that time, KTLLP has grown by merger or acquisition with over twelve smaller practices in the Black Hills area.
This rich history of change and growth has led to three name changes and seven building remodels/additions. The most recent was the November 2007 completion of a three level, 14,300 square foot addition to house professional staff and raise a beautiful rooftop patio!
In addition to growing the accounting practice, the Partners of KTLLP continue to be visionaries who choose to delve into business solutions for their clients outside of traditional tax, audit, and accounting services. In 1997, the firm opened a technology division called KT Connections, Inc. with two computer technicians to manage the new venture. Years later, that newly created affiliate company has grown to over 40 staff members who design, sell, and service over 25 business technology solutions in the Black Hills, including networking, commercial sound, telephone solutions, and accounting software. KT Connections and Ketel Thorstenson didn’t stop there. Dakota Backup & Recovery, LLC, a data backup and disaster recovery solution provider, was formed in 2005 - today, Dakota Backup is backing up and restoring data for clients worldwide!
The KTLLP family employs over 100 professional staff members, including 17 partners. Throughout its history, Ketel Thorstenson has been the leading accounting firm in the region, and today, the firm operates out of Rapid City, Spearfish, and Custer. We are proud of our longevity and thankful for all of the clients who we consider as friends. KTLLP looks forward to many more years of continued growth serving the regional market.
