Title: Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist
A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse with expertise in the nursing management of a defined specialty population. CNS practice is characterized by the translation of knowledge and evidence-based standards into high-quality patient care delivery and outcomes—either through direct care or by influencing the practice of others.
The CNS role requires advanced clinical expertise, an understanding of evidence-based practice, and proficiency in communication, collaboration, consultation, evaluation, education, mentorship, and change management. This position creates an environment that supports clinical inquiry to improve outcomes across three spheres of influence:
- Patient/Family
- Nurses and Nursing Practice
- Organization/System (NACNS, 2010)
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Direct Care: Provide advanced patient/family care, develop care plans with interdisciplinary teams, and improve quality of life.
- Consultation: Offer specialized expertise to staff and systems for practice improvements.
- System Leadership: Manage change and lead innovations to improve outcomes.
- Collaboration: Build strong professional relationships to advance clinical excellence.
- Coaching: Mentor and educate nurses in evidence-based practices.
- Research: Translate and integrate evidence into practice and quality initiatives.
- Ethical Decision-Making & Advocacy: Identify and act on ethical concerns while fostering team accountability.
Performance will be evaluated in areas such as documentation, judgment/decision-making, technical skills, teamwork, productivity, quality improvement, communication, professional growth, customer service, and extended roles.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40
Requirements
Education: Master’s degree (MSN or MS in Nursing)
Experience:
- Minimum of two years of recent clinical obstetrical nursing experience
- Minimum of two years of labor and delivery experience
- Previous teaching experience preferred
Licensure/Certifications:
- Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan
- Certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Basic Life Support (within orientation period)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (within orientation period if covering critically ill patients)

- Strong analytical, organizational, and prioritization skills
- Proficiency in multiple software applications
- Flexibility and ability to manage concurrent projects
- Problem-solving and issue resolution abilities
- Strong communication and negotiation skills
- Effective collaboration within inter-professional teams
Physical & Cognitive Demands:
- High levels of mental/visual fatigue (computer-based work 70–90% of time)
- Fine hand/eye coordination for sustained periods
- Regularly lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional heavier assistance required
